Chapter 17 - The Portal of Worlds

“Where are we?” wondered Kali, the commotion of the shadow creatures no longer present. All was silent. And dark.

“What is this place?” asked a bewildered Ryn.

Kali, Ryn, Anden and Marac hovered in the darkness of the heavens, surrounded by millions of stars that each had seen countless times at night. The stars danced above, below, and around them. It was as if they were floating in space. Below them was a bright turquoise green sphere—a planet—with white clouds swirling over its surface, although they didn’t yet know it was a planet.

“What is it?” asked Kali, referring to the sphere, never having seen their world from above before, indeed, never having seen any world from above, before.

“Is that... could that be Teynia?” wondered Ryn.

“I don’t know, but the colors are the same,” replied Kali, referencing the sphere’s bright turquoise green color and streaks of white swirling across its surface.

“So are the stars,” remarked Anden, looking upon a constellation he recognized called “Ariys’ Waterfall,” named after Ariys III, son of Northern King Damadeir, who stories said sailed off a waterfall in search of those who sacked his father’s kingdom. He did not fall with the water; instead, he kept sailing into the night sky. When Anden pointed to the constellation, something strange happened…

In an instant, the cluster of stars that formed the Ariys’ Waterfall constellation descended upon them. The foursome found themselves inside the constellation, surrounded by its brilliant lights.

Anden again pointed to a star within the cluster, and they zoomed even closer, so that they were now staring at a single star within the constellation. It was not just that they were staring at it; it was as if they were actually there, inside a solar system of planets orbiting the star. Kali counted 22 planets in all, of varying sizes and colors, some enormous, some minuscule, but each unique.

Kali pointed her finger at the small, fiery red planet closest to the blazing sun, and the planet’s orb raced toward them, permitting a glimpse of the planet’s surface. They saw red sand with flames shooting out of holes in the sand, a humanoid species flying above the fiery surface on winged animals toward a mountain with a dome structure on it. Kali put her hand in front of her face to block the glare and instantly, the planet rushed away. They found themselves back in orbit with the other planets.

Ryn tried it next, pointing to the 14th planet out from the sun, which was an oversized blue planet with green and white swirls. The planet’s orb rushed into view, allowing a glance at the surface. They floated amongst an emerald, green forest above a tall forest castle. Below them raced six legged creatures galloping like horses. On the creatures’ backs sat four legged beings. Ryn pushed the world away like Kali had done earlier and the planet whizzed back into its place in orbit with the other planets.

Anden pointed at another planet, the 7th out from the sun, and nothing happened.
